I rode into Fairfax on the 11th of Oct, a Saturday. That morning, actually, was quite eventful as well and maybe I should start there.
I loaded up my gear again Saturday morning, followed by a couple cups of cheap coffee provided by the hostel I stayed at in downtown San Francisco. As I was walking back from the T mobile store empty-handed, people were lining the curbside with phones out. Not but 1 minute later at least 50 semi reckless and loud police Harleys with lights and sirens going, we’re flying down the hills to block other roads and clear the people of the streets to make way for president Obama, I didn’t look into the reason why he was there, but the convoy was gone just as fast as it showed up.
An hour later I said goodbye to San Francisco by way of the Golden Gate bridge. A great feeling came over me as I passed, it is a world famous bridge and I did it while I was traveling half of the United States.
The ride to Fairfax was relatively short from there. Through Sausalito, over to San Rafael, and 15 minutes NNW to Fairfax.
The day had about 2 and a half hours left and I knew that I needed to find my camping spot I was looking for, which also turned out to be the campsite I wasn’t looking for. I asked for too many directions and needless to say I was confused. I don’t recall ever being more happy for being confused in my life. I’ll tell you why.
I pulled up next to another cyclist on a mountain bike and asked for more directions. He told me he was heading to a place that was on the way. I followed him up a steep dirt trail that winded up a mountain side. It was, by no means an easy climb with a loaded down mountain bike. Dreyden, the man that I was following, met me at a flat area of the climb that had a few trail heads to chose from and there he told me about a paved road that we could get on. He told me that it would lead me up near lake Lagunitas and that I might be able to pitch my tent near there.
I made the second half of the climb and came to a park near the lake and saw some people sitting next to a white Toyota pickup. I asked them if there was water around because my camelback and bottle were out of water at this point.
I replenished my water supply and asked those same people for directions. We got to talking and they invited me to the birthday party they were having for a friend of theirs and they had beer and tacos. Both of those things sounded so so good at the time. We walked up the hill to the gathering, everybody that was there was so inviting and full of questions about my journey so far. I got invited to one their houses for beers and to watch the Giants game. Before we left, Liz offered me a place to crash, with Steve and her and her kids, Henry and Josephine. I gladly accepted. We all had a good breakfast and the kids kept me very much entertained as we spent the morning together.
On Sunday, I got in touch with Tim who said that he could hook me up with some work to build the funds back up. He told me he’d pick me up in the morning to start some work.
I stayed with Liz and Steve on Sunday night and hit the job site at 8 am, Monday morning. The project is a complete house remodel that sits atop a hill that looks over San Rafael. Monday and Tuesday were demolition days. If you know me, I don’t mind doing demo work.
I feel very comfortable around here, in Fairfax and the surrounding areas. Liz and Steve have been so kind to me, they have let me stay at Liz’s house in the garage, on a futon. Steve invited me to shoot pool in the leagues last night, Liz, Steve, the kids, and I had a great dinner tonight followed by dessert.
Fairfax, like I said, is a great town. Mountain biking was pioneered here, cycling is huge, the community helps eachother, the people are friendky, there is creativity around every corner, the music scene, from what I’ve seen and heard, is a great one as well. I’m not sure where this part of the leg of my journey will take me, but what I do know is that I am enjoying every minute of this stay, whether it be permanent or temporary.
I plan on working the rest of the week, for sure, I was invited to go surfing on Saturday, so I at least have to stay until Sunday or Monday.
